Abstract. The article examines the role of reading in the education and development of students. Presents various techniques to promote literacy and reading in the early stages of primary education and their impact on the students' literary knowledge, skills and competences. Recently, interactive teaching methods have been used to achieve these goals, in addition to traditional methods. Interactivity make the learning environment more exciting and engaging, reducing the difficulty of mastering the language. The use of interactive methods in teaching Bulgarian language and literature in 1st - 4th grades helps foster literacy and reading desire among students. Using interactive techniques and methods in 1st – 4th grades encourages literacy and reading.
