Abstract. The article examines the problem of the substantive nature of the modernization of higher education. It is accepted that interdisciplinary learning is one of the characteristics of modernization in education. Therefore, it is seen as a research competence approach that changes the static learning process, influences 
the role of the teacher, develops interdisciplinary competences and stimulates 
cooperation in pedagogical interaction. One of the specific characteristics of 
contemporary modernization – interdisciplinarity – is seen as a new research 
methodology in higher education.
