INVESTIGATION ON EMERGING ADULTS IN BULGARIA

Zornitza Ganeva
Sofia University

Abstract: Similarly to other European countries, in Bulgaria scholars can identify a developmental stage of emerging adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine: (1) The criteria and conceptions that adolescents (young people attending college) and emerging adults (young people attending university), in Bulgaria have for adulthood; (2) Whether differences in adulthood criteria, achievement of those criteria, and identity development are related to variations in adult status (i.e., perceptions of being an adult coupled with taking on adult responsibilities), and (3) Age and gender differences in conceptions of adulthood. Participants included 208 Bulgarian young people (134 women, 74 men) aged 16-30 attending a colleague or university in Sofia. Results found that (1) the majority of Bulgarian young people did not consider themselves to be adults; and (2) issues related to norm compliance, chronological transitions and interdependence ranked as the most important criteria for adulthood. The results suggest that the current generation of young people in Bulgarian society conceptualizes the transition to adulthood in collectivistic terms.
Keywords: criteria for adulthood; emerging adulthood; identity development, Bulgaria
